About FoNESP

The Friends of New Earswick Pool (FoNESP) are a registered charity (1188111) who formed in October 2017, in response to the news that the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust planned to close the New Earswick Pool.

After a successful campaign FoNESP  took over the running of the Pool in January 2019, and today the pool is used 12 hours a day, 7 days a week by a range of swimming clubs, schools, a care home and parent and toddler groups. It is registered with the Local Authority as being an asset of community value.

Our pool has a unique history, having been opened in 1966 by the Rowntree Trust with the support of local community, notably children being asked to donate 'Half a Crown' and the villagers joining a 'Buy a Brick' scheme. As part of the Garden Village scheme, it was built to enhance the health and well being of the local community.

The vision of our charity is to:
“develop our pool into a modern, sustainable asset providing benefit to swimmers of any age or ability.”

Our mission statement:
"
To provide a welcoming and inclusive swimming facility that promotes health, well-being, and social connection in our community. We are dedicated to offering affordable access to swimming for all ages and abilities. Through careful management and sustainable practices, we aim to preserve this vital community resource for future generations while enhancing the overall quality of life in our area."

FoNESP is made up of a diverse group of volunteers who bring a range of skills and knowledge to the team. We are always keen to welcome new members. Find out more and take a look at any volunteer vacancies here.
